The Conjuring 4 will mark the end of the major horror franchise after more than ten years of development, and the date of the fourquel’s release has finally been disclosed. The last film in the series will feature the return of Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Lorraine, and Ed Warren—the legendary paranormal investigators who have been the main thread for most of the interwoven universe—though storyline specifics are still unknown. Michael Chaves, the director of The Nun II and the preceding film, will also return to The Conjuring 4 with a script written by fellow franchise veteran David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.
Warner Bros. has announced that The Conjuring 4 will open in theatres on September 5, 2025, according to Variety. The news was released along with the studio’s announcement that The Bride, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein adaptation, will now open one week earlier at the end of September 2025 instead of the first week of October.
The Date Of The Conjuring 4’s Release Is Set Up To Be A Serious 2025 Horror Box Office Contest
The news that The Conjuring 4 will conclude the primary franchise has left people curious about how it will wrap up the series, even though the last several films have fallen short of the critical and commercial heights of the first two and the box office milestone of The Nun. With the previous news of a Conjuring TV series in production for Max, which was reportedly set chronologically after the events of the films, this curiosity was piqued even more. There is plenty of narrative space for the series to go on, since the Warrens have at least ten more cases that need to be adapted for the big screen.
However, The Conjuring 4 is now scheduled to open in theatres in early September 2025, ushering in not only the end of one of the most successful horror franchises to date, but also a significant horror box office struggle. The second Insidious film will arrive just one week beforehand, and Saw 11 and the Jordan Peele-directed horror Him will be released during September. In 2023, Saw X and The Exorcist: Believer engaged in a fierce battle that saw the former win handily. It would be fascinating to see if the usually dominating Conjuring product prevails in this matchup.
Warner Bros. may eventually rely on The Conjuring 4’s box office results to choose where to go with the franchise, as no other titles have been confirmed for it. Although The Nun II didn’t quite make as much money as its predecessor, which is still the highest-grossing film, it did restart the franchise after The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’s meagre returns after its mid-pandemic release. Should the last major film turn out to be a box office success, the studio might consider accelerating the creation of any unfinished projects that James Wan and other creatives may have.
