A major source of inspiration for Seiko’s latest limited-edition timepiece is the Medicine Seller from the beloved anime Mononoke. The cooperation work opens in theatres right before the latest Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa movie.
For those who enjoy the eerie horror anime Mononoke, 2024 is a fantastic year. April saw the conclusion of the stage play adaptation’s second run in Japan, and on July 26th, Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa will open in theatres. Seiko has also officially announced the introduction of its limited-edition Mononoke watch, which will only be available in 2,000 pieces. The item, which costs 49,280 yen (about US$844), is currently on preorder at the PREMICO store (until reserve spots are filled). Fans of the series will love this exquisitely made watch, which heavily echoes the Medicine Seller. Its muted mystical style goes well with both casual chic and semi-formal wear.
Seiko’s Latest Wristwatch Is Ideal for Addicts of the Cutting-Edge Mononoke Animation
The colour scheme of the Seiko watch is inspired by Mononoke’s Medicine Seller; the metal moth inlay, the dark blue leather band, and the concentric circles on the watch face all allude to his kimono design. Additionally, the character’s red and blue cosmetic highlights are highlighted by the washi tape texture on the dial. Little elements of the watch depict the Medicine Seller’s strategy for vanquishing the restless earthbound spirits known as mononoke, which he confronts and subdues in the anime. The dial’s outer periphery features three, six, and nine o’clock markings, which correspond to the character symbols for Form, Truth, and Reason. These reflect the three stages involved in achieving the real form of a mononoke. In the episodic chapters of Mononoke, which trace the Medicine Seller’s adventures in searching for and eliminating evil spirits, the procedure appears frequently.
Two of the Medicine Seller’s tools are displayed on the dial: the eyes of the Demon-Slaying Sword are clearly visible beneath the 12 o’clock mark, and a metal inlay of his balance scale highlights the six o’clock point. The watch’s serial number is visible through an engraved image of the Medicine Seller grinning seductively on the stainless steel caseback. Once all the pieces are sold, the Seiko watch—which is incredibly detailed and comes with a red velvet cushion and a gold-stamped box that mimics the Medicine Seller’s wooden toolbox—is sure to become a sought-after collector among fans of Mononoke.
Inspired by Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, Mononoke is a Supernatural Mystery Anime.
Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, an anime horror TV anthology that debuted in 2006, gave rise to Mononoke. Three supernatural stories are told in the latter series, which is produced by Toei Animation. “Goddess of the Dark Tower,” which is based on Kyoka Izumi’s play Tenshu Monogatari, is the inspiration for Mononoke. An animated music video for the main theme song, “Love Sick,” from the upcoming Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa has just been released. It reveals scenes from the movie.
Starting on May 26, 2024, a manga adaptation of Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa was serialised in Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Sirius magazine. A first-volume compilation was scheduled to be released on July 23. Crunchyroll offers Mononoke anime series for streaming. On July 26, Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa opens in Japanese theatres.
