August 9th saw the cinema premiere of Tilman Singer’s horror thriller Cuckoo, which stars Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Dan Stevens (The Guest), Jessica Henwick (Love and Monsters), Marton Csókás (Freelance), Greta Fernández (Santo), and Jan Bluthardt (Tatort). It was finally given a digital release a month later and is now accessible on Amazon Prime Video, where it can be rented for $9.99 or bought for $19.99.
The official synopsis for the movie is as follows: Gretchen, 17, reluctantly moves out of her American home to be with her father, who has bought a new family and relocated into a resort in the German Alps. Mr. König, her father’s supervisor, welcomes them to their new home and seems strangely interested in Gretchen’s silent half-sister Alma. There seems to be a problem in this peaceful vacation paradise. Before Gretchen finds out a startling fact that affects her own family as well, she is tormented by weird noises and visions of blood. The film pits Schafer against an enigmatic bird-like monster with a scream-like call that aims to impregnate women with her evil brood, according to a report from Variety some time ago. Singer based the tale on the folklore surrounding the cuckoo bird, some of which are brood parasites—that is, they deposit their eggs in the nests of other species.
Following her performance in the 2018 supernatural horror thriller Luz, Bluthardt’s second feature-length project, is Singer’s latest. “A young taxi driver running from the clutches of a possessed woman, whose confession could endanger the lives of everyone who crosses her path,” was the narrative that Luz related. On Cuckoo, Singer was joined by a number of his Luz collaborators. Apart from Bluthardt, Paul Faltz, the cameraman, Simon Waskow, the composer, and Dario Mendez Acosta, the production designer, were also back from Luz.
Financed by Neon, Cuckoo. Markus Halberschmidt, Josh Rosenbaum, Maria Tsigka, Ken Kao, Thor Bradwell, and Ben Rimmer produced the movie. Fiction Park in Germany and Waypoint Entertainment in the United States collaborated to produce it. For Neon, Tom Quinn, Jeff Deutchman, Emily Thomas, and Ryan Friscia are the executive producers.
