Early next year will see the cinematic debut of Bau: Artist at War, a Holocaust film starring Emile Hirsch as real-life artist Joseph Bau.

With distribution from Showbiz Direct and Republic Pictures, Sean McNamara’s historical drama picture (Reagan) is scheduled to open in theatres on January 24, 2025. Adam Tsekhman, Eugene Lipinski, Michael Benyaer, Josh Blacker, Yan Tual, Inbar Lavi, Josh Zuckerman, and Brittany Mitchell complete the cast.

The inspirational tale of Bau: Artist at Work revolves around Holocaust survivor Bau (Hirsch), who used his humour and inventiveness to get by in concentration camps and whose forging abilities helped many others escape the horrors of those places. Over the course of the movie, Bau and Rebecca (Lavi) fall in love.

“So excited to share the Bau trailer with the world,” explained McNamara of the video that is exclusive. “This is a story that the world needs to see, to remind us of the power of hope in even the darkest times. It’s a powerful testament to resilience, and I can’t wait for everyone to experience it.”

Based on Bau’s memoir, the script was written by Deborah Smerecnik, Ron Bass, and Sonia Kifferstein, and McNamara directed the movie. The producers are Marc Griffith, Michelle P. Griffith, David Brookwell, Smerecnik, and McNamara.

In the teaser, Hirsch tries his best to maintain his optimism in the face of disaster. In the movie, he plays Bau and explains, “There are some things they can’t take from us: laughter, joy, and our spirits.”

Having won best picture at the Tarzana International Film Festival, Myrtle Beach Film Festival, and Sunscreen Film Festival, Bau: Artist at War has enjoyed success on the festival circuit.

McNamara is renowned for having directed films including Soul Surfer, The Miracle Season, and Reagan. Milk, Lone Survivor, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are among Hirsch’s prior credits.
