After a fierce struggle at the box office over the Lunar New Year holiday, “Hitman 2” emerged victorious, demonstrating that lead actor Kwon Sang-woo is a crowd-pleaser with his blend of comedy and violence.
According to the Korea Box Office Information System (KOBIS), the film, which opened in theatres across the country on January 22, brought in 177,133 admissions on Saturday, keeping it at the top of the box office for the sixth consecutive day. The film earned 1.83 million in total, surpassing the 1.36 million earned by “Dark Nuns,” which starred Song Hye-kyo from Netflix’s “The Glory.” The film was released on January 24.
Following the successful model, the 2020 film “Hitman” sequel tells the tale of Jun (Kwon), a former secret agent turned cartoonist who is set up for a terrorist strike that imitates his recently published web comic.
The National Intelligence Service suspects Jun of being a perpetrator of the terrorist assault, which thickens the plot and sets up a number of humorous and action-packed scenes that have appealed to holiday audiences.
Kwon’s earnest and occasionally unorthodox approach to marketing the picture has attracted media attention and public interest, making his promotional efforts for the film especially remarkable and contributing to its success.
Kwon made headlines with his kneeling motion during an event he hosted with moviegoers prior to its release.
His first strong statement during the occasion was, “I don’t want to weakly say, ‘Please watch this movie.” He then surprised attendees by kneeling and saying “I am really desperate. I want to beat ‘Dark Nuns’ and ‘Secret: Untold Melody’ (other movies released around the same time as ‘Hitman 2).”
