Flow, an independent animated film, won the 97th Academy Awards’ best animated feature prize, earning Latvia its first Oscar. ComicBook reports that the fantasy adventure film has been added to the prestigious Criterion Collection, joining several other notable films that will be released on Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray, and DVD. One of the most watched domestic films in the country, the 2024 animated picture made its Cannes picture Festival debut more than a year earlier.

Plot

The official logline of Flow explains that it is a dialogue-free film that chronicles a fantastical voyage across magical and natural regions. It centres on a brave cat who, after a massive flood destroys his house, joins forces with a dog, a capybara, a lemur, and a bird to steer a boat towards dry land. To survive the dangers of a freshly aquatic planet, they have to rely on their cunning, bravery, and trust.

Produced at $3.7 million, the movie was more expensive than blockbusters like Inside Out 2 ($200 million) and The Wild Robot ($78 million). The team used Blender, an open-source, free computer animation program, to help keep expenses down. As he thanked Blender, Zilbalodis expressed his hope that Flow’s victory “will open doors to independent animation filmmakers around the world.”

Director

“Director Gints Zilbalodis may be gathering an admittedly adorable posse of all creatures bright and beautiful, each of them rendered in a gorgeous, sometimes crude style of animation that would be best characterised as Early PlayStation Cut-Scene Chic,” wrote Rolling Stone film critic David Fear in his praise of the film.
