Avatar: The Way of Water now in its fifth week on the charts and domestic total increased by $31 million to $562 million, and it is getting closer and closer to reaching $2 billion worldwide (if it does not reach that mark this week, it will do so next week). That is evidently the curse of the Avatar series—always doomed to make a lot of money and have nothing much to say afterward other than “that movie was fun, I’m ready for the next sequel.” Of course, this is all way above everything else on the box office charts, making it not particularly exciting to talk about.
M3GAN, which is more like M2GAN, comes in second, adding $17 million to its $56 million total after two weeks. Puss In Boots: The Last Wish had $13 million and $106 million in total after four weeks. A Man Called Otto, starring Tom Hanks, saw a dramatic increase in distribution this week, reaching $12 million (with an $18 million total). This weekend, the two most notable newcomers finished fifth and sixth: Plane and House Party, which earned $10 million and $3 million, respectively.
However, the buzzy horror film Skinamarink came in 11th place with a respectable $746,000 in a somewhat limited release, denying us of an exciting top 10 underdog story. The majority of people seem to find the movie to be somewhere between “genius” and “boring,” so it will be interesting to see if it climbs the charts in the coming weeks.
