Where are you from, and how did you get started in the music business?

BigB Carter: I’m from New York originally, and I went to Full Sail University in Florida. I started interning at Universal Music Group when I was 18 in the artist development department where I sat in studio sessions working with newly signed artist with the company. Then 2 years later I started doing A&R work for Baby Bash, and Marques Houston just to name a few.

Where did you work after you finished college?

BigB Carter: After I graduated from Full sail I moved back to Saint Louis Missouri and I got a job at Atlantic Records I worked in the marketing department. It was the less sexy side of the music business, but I learned a lot at Atlantic by working in marketing and promotions especially on the international side, it gave me experience with a variety of artist.

What other projects did you work on for Atlantic during this period?

BigB Carter: I really enjoyed working on Ed Sheeran First studio album Titled “Live at Bedford” which debuted #1 on the UK album charts selling 100,000 copies in the first week and going 7x platinum for sales of 2.1 million copies. I now have a lifelong relationship with his team. I handled all of the digital marketing, social media marketing, ads etc for the album.

So when was it then that you decided to launch your own company, Megatron Muzik Group?

BigB Carter: At that point I was ready to try something different. I started Megatron Muzik Group in the winter of 2015. Megatron Muzik Group was conceived as an Artist Management Company. A few months in, we morphed into a Management Company/Record Label as well and that’s where most of our time and effort ended up going into. I had gotten a call from Tina Davis–he asked me if I would like to A&R some records for him freelance. I then A&R’d Some records for Miguel’s album “Wildheart” in 2015.

After I did this album, I started getting calls from other labels to do the same thing for them. So it was then I worked as an A&R ‘gun for hire’ for most of the label groups including RCA, Warner Music, Universal Music Group and Atlantic. It was great–I A&R’d a lot of records.

In 2019 labels started asking me to come back inside full-time. I thought if the right offer came along, I would consider it. Around that time, my good friend (producer) Shakur Green who recommended me to Ken Bunt (CEO of Disney Music Group) to A&R an album for the Jonas Brothers. Ken liked the album we did and asked me to run the A&R dept. at Disney Music Group I told Ken at that moment I was busy with some projects with Megatron Muzik but I was more than happy to freelance.but that I had four outside A&R projects that I needed to finish.

It’s clear that labels respect you for A&R-ing albums, finding the hit songs for a project, and/or enabling the artist to co-write the best songs.

BigB Carter: Throughout my career I’ve worked mostly on projects and artists which are very song-oriented projects. With each song, I study the structure and lyrics, and work with the songwriters to help them get the right song ready for the appropriate artist’s audience.

When did you start working at Atlantic Records?

BigB Carter I started working at Atlantic in October 2008. I oversee the A&R department except for Urban music–I do rock, pop, and I dabble in country. We’ve got a great staff, around a dozen people who work with me.

How do you decide which artists to sign? These days, do artists/bands need to be developed and established already before you sign them?

BigB Carter: There are no rules in terms of which artists we sign. We’ve signed certain bands and artist who have already built a large following. Or sometimes we’ll sign an artist we just believe in, and start out on the ground floor.
