Coco 2 is in the early stages of development at Pixar Animation Studios, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed during the annual shareholder meeting. The eagerly awaited follow-up is scheduled to hit theaters in 2029.
Storyline
In the 2017 film Coco, a 12-year-old kid who aspires to be a musician is accidentally taken to the Land of the Dead. There, he looks for his great-great-grandfather, a musician who passed away, to assist him persuade their family to let him perform.
“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure, and we can’t wait to share more soon,” Iger explained.
Director
Members of the original film’s creative team, including co-director Adrian Molina and director Lee Unkrichn, will return for the sequel. Inside Out 2 and Toy Story 4 will be produced by Mark Nielsen.
The Best Animated Movie
“Remember Me” a song composed by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, won two Academy Awards for best animated picture and best original song, respectively, in Coco. In addition, the movie took home the BAFTA for best animated film, the Golden Globe for best motion picture animation, and the Critics’ Choice Awards for best song and best animated feature.
Additionally, Disney is preparing a ride-through attraction called Coco, which will debut at Disney California Adventure.
