DreamWorks Releases “Forgotten Island” in the Fall of 2026

Forgotten Island, the next original animated movie from DreamWorks Animation, is a bold move. The film, which is slated for release on September 25, 2026, portrays a fantastical island journey. Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, a gifted team, are directing and writing it, carrying on DreamWorks’ tradition of inventive and thrilling narratives.

Theater Release Date 

On Tuesday, the animation studio owned by Universal revealed Forgotten Island, a brand-new original film. On September 25, 2026, it will debut in theaters.

Storyline 

The film is characterized as a broad party comedy adventure that takes its heroes to a long-forgotten, magical island with roots in Philippine mythology, while plot details are being kept under wraps.

Director and Producer

Joel Crawford (The Croods 2, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) will co-write and direct the film with Januel Mercado. Crawford will be produced by his longtime partner, Mark Swift. For their critically praised Puss in Boots sequel, which debuted in theaters in 2022, the pair had previously received numerous nominations for accolades, including the Oscar.

Following his co-directing role in Puss in Boots 2, Mercado’s first full directing credit is on Forgotten Island. Additionally, he oversaw the story for Crawford’s The Croods 2.

The Wild Robot, DreamWorks Animation’s adaptation of Peter Brown’s book, opened with $35.7 million in the US and went on to earn about $144 million domestically and over $333 million internationally. It received three Oscar nominations as well.

Between movies like The Bad Guys and The Wild Robot, DreamWorks Animation, under the direction of Margie Cohn, has been winning a lot. A live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon, which was seen at CinemaCon earlier this month, The Bad Guys 2, Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, Shrek 5, and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 are all on the studio’s itinerary.
