Fuego Fino, a women-led eco-friendly alcohol wholesaler expands further into the Mexican-spirits category with Zunte Mezcal.
“Mezcal is an emerging segment within the Mexican-spirits market that has recently seen an uptick in demand. While there are many Tequila products lining the shelves, the Mezcal line of products is one of the most sought after by retailers looking to add depth to their offerings. I like the custom-bottle presentation that Zunte selected, and I am honored to start distributing it within the Arizona market, ” says Jessica Contreras, CEO of Fuego Fino.
Zunte Mezcal
Zunte Mezcal wants to be recognized for respecting the communities that produce traditional Mezcal. Its name, “Zunte,” means “Spirit’s Strength” and the brand is committed to preserving traditional Mezcal production practices.
Zunte Mezcal is produced in San Luis del Río, Oaxaca using agave Espadin. The agaves are cooked underground for 4 days and then crushed by a stone tahona pulled by either a horse or mule. Next, the agave fibers ferment with water for 12 to 15 days in wooden vats. Finally, the mash is distilled twice over a period of 36 hours in copper stills.
Differences between mezcal and tequila?
- The first difference between the two is that Tequila is obtained only from the agave Tequilana Weber (blue agave), while, Mezcal can come from more than 12 species of different agaves, although the agave most used is the agave angustifolia (espadín agave) and you can also mix different agaves to obtain some unique flavor assemblages; this is usually achieved with silvestres (wild).
- The Tequila got it in 1975 and covers 110,000 km2 of the country, but only 5 states of the Mexican Republic can produce it; whereas, Mezcal obtained its D.O. in 1995 and now 9 states can produce it. Now Puebla has just obtained its D.O.
