Gabbar Singh, starring Pawan Kalyan, was re-released yesterday as a special fan event to commemorate the birthday of the Telugu megastar. With Sunday night previews included, the movie brought in almost Rs. 6.50 crore globally, setting a record for the greatest opening day gross for a re-released Telugu movie. Gabbar Singh outperformed films like Murari and Businessman, which made about Rs. 5 crore on their opening day.
When the figures are broken down, Gabbar Singh made Rs. 75 lakhs from foreign markets and Rs. 5.75 crore in India. In addition to being a record overall, the India figure outperformed the Tamil movie Ghilli, which earlier this year made Rs. 4.70 crore on its opening day. While Ghilli made over Rs. 25 crore over its entire run, Gabbar Singh is unlikely to have such a long run given that Telugu re-releases are typically one-day events with minimal post-release receipts.
Gabbar Singh was the second-highest-grossing Telugu movie ever when it was released in 2012, taking home 90 crore in India and 102 crore globally. The movie’s profits in India have gotten closer to Rs. 100 crore since its recent re-release.
