The theatrical release of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein Netflix film has been confirmed. Del Toro’s adaptation of the famous Mary Shelley novel follows Dr. Pretorius as he sets out to find Frankenstein’s monster and carry on the experiments that Dr. Victor Frankenstein began. Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, Charles Dance, Burn Gorman, Ralph Ineson, and David Bradley are among the main cast members of Frankenstein. Next year, Frankenstein will be released.
In response, Del Toro revealed that Frankenstein would be “releasing on Netflix in 2025.” The post was made by Discussing Film.
What This Means For Frankenstein
The Length of The Release Window Is Unclear
The fact that Netflix is producing Frankenstein justifies the misunderstanding over its theatrical run. Even though the streaming studio has previously released films like Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in theatres, Netflix films are often released straight to the platform. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Del Toro’s prior Netflix project, had a very limited theatrical run in 2022 before being made available on Netflix a month later. This release plan was probably created to satisfy the Oscar qualifying release requirement.
The film would probably aim for a theatrical distribution in order to qualify for prizes, considering the unique visual language that is evident even in Frankenstein’s opening image. At the very least, if not more, technical prizes would be a natural choice for the movie. In his statement, Del Toro merely stated that Frankenstein would have a theatrical premiere without going into detail about the manner of the release. Nonetheless, Frankenstein might perform well in theatres due to the story’s familiarity and del Toro’s widespread appeal. With any luck, this would extend the horror story’s window for release.
Our Take On Frankenstein’s Theatrical Release
Frankenstein’s Theatrical Release Potential Is Exciting
Del Toro’s films are worthy of being viewed on a large screen. Therefore, rather than an awards-eligible release like Nightmare Alley or Pinocchio, it would be fantastic if Frankenstein could have a full theatrical release more akin to the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water. Given how well-regarded Del Toro is as an artist, Netflix may be open to abandoning its streaming-heavy business model in order to extend Frankenstein’s theatrical exclusivity.
