Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard and director Jason Reitman are reuniting for a remake of the 1999 film Idle Hands at Sony Pictures, after working together on the comedy biography Saturday Night and the most recent Ghostbusters films.
What is Idle Hands About?
The original Idle Hands was released in April 1999 and was written by Rodman Flender, with screenplays by Terri Hughes and Ron Milbau. Anton (Devon Sawa), a typical adolescent who is somewhat of a lethargic stoner, was at the centre of the plot. However, as his hand becomes possessed and he is forced to go on a killing rampage, his straightforward life is completely upended. Vivica A. Fox, Jessica Alba, Elden Henson, and Seth Green are among the cast members.
Critics first gave the film a poor reception, despite the fact that it is now considered a sort of cult classic. Additionally, it was a box office failure, earning just $1.8 million in its first week and just over $4 million in total revenue despite an estimated $25 million budget. The movie’s distribution plans were also affected by the fact that it was released in the same month as the Columbine High School massacre.
The Idle Hands adaptation will be written by Wolfhard and Billy Bryk, who previously wrote and directed the horror comedy Hell of a Summer. After Hell of a Summer received a favourable response at the Toronto Film Festival, they are also being considered to helm the project. The movie was purchased by Neon, which intends to release it in the summer of 2025.
Reitman and Bryk are also reunited in the Idle Hands remake, which Reitman is producing alongside Jennifer Todd and Suzanne Todd under the Team Todd name. At Sony, Maia Eyre is in charge of the project, while Gil Keenan is also producing.
Wolfhard will play Mike Wheeler in the last season of Stranger Things and will also play the lead in the next movie, The Legend of Ochi.
