Joy is undoubtedly the feeling that Disney and Pixar are experiencing at the moment.

That’s after “Inside Out 2,” the 2019 sequel to the hit movie, surpassed “Frozen 2” as the highest-grossing animated picture of all time on Wednesday, taking home $1.46 billion at the global box office.

Hollywood, which had a sluggish summer season and is still dealing with the fallout from the actors’ and writers’ strikes of the previous year, is receiving a much-needed boost from this.

“Inside Out 2” debuted in theatres last month and became the fastest animated picture to ever cross the $1 billion mark in just 19 days after its release. In its sixth week of release in theatres, it has now surpassed all previous box office records to become the 13th highest-grossing movie ever.

“From Europe to Asia, the Middle East the US, you just see incredible, record-breaking numbers for a movie,” explained Daniel Loria, editorial director of Box Office Pro, an organisation that gathers sales and showtime information from thousands of theatres nationwide. “It’s definitely a great success story, not only for movie theaters here in the United States, but all over the world.”

The movie has already created history in the Americas, rising to the top of the box office in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Uruguay in a short amount of time.

As the movie gets ready to debut in Japan the following week, Loria believes it might close its theatrical run with even bigger box office receipts. The movie has already been a hit throughout Asia and the Pacific, earning $84 million in just 12 days of play.

“It really breathed new life into the global box office and reestablished a momentum that we haven’t seen since the ‘Barbenheimer’ craze of last summer,”  Loria explained.

After a poor start to the summer movie season for the film industry, “Inside Out 2” is being released amid much anticipation.

“The record-breaking performance of ‘Inside Out 2’ has been incredibly important for movie theatres as the film swooped in and changed the mood of this industry that, at the time of the film’s release, saw a summer movie season that was being written off as a box office bust,” explained Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.
