Storyline
Sheridan’s script depicts the harsh treatment of Native Americans in the 1920s with eerie historical similarities. Systemic brutality that was legally sanctioned and coerced assimilation through Catholic boarding schools were two examples. The thought that “White men could murder Native Americans and face little or no consequence” helps to anchor the drama in historical fact. Father Renaud and Marshal Kent are shown carrying out these deeds, highlighting the inequities of the time.
Based on actual female marshals, U.S. Marshal Mamie Fossett captures Spencer and gets in touch with Montana Sheriff McDowell. She makes allusion to the Winchester House, which was constructed by Sarah Winchester, the rifle heir’s widow. From 1886 until her death in 1922, Sarah ordered continuous construction because she thought she was tormented by the ghosts of people who had been killed by Winchester guns. The mansion, which is now a tourist destination, had strange architectural features. Ironically, Helen Mirren, who played Cara Dutton in 1923, took on the role of Sarah Winchester in the 2018 movie Winchester.
Elizabeth, meantime, travels through a terrifying ordeal from Boston to Chicago. They lashes out after being attacked on a train, but witnesses Hillary and Paul (played by Montgomery and Augustus Prew) prevent her from being arrested. They show her their Winnetka mansion, which stands in sharp contrast to the American West and is renowned for its affluence and social progressivism.
