Numerous other releases have eclipsed Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, which she directed. It’s possible that a wave of new releases over the past few weeks has left about half a dozen films showing in theaters. A few of these are performing fairly well at the box office (Crew, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire), another might have become a big hit (Shaitaan), and a few others are still battling it out to remain in theaters (Madgaon Express, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar).
On its fifth weekend, one more movie is still looking for a way to make a splash and hasn’t given up yet. The movie in question is called “Laapataa Ladies”, and it debuted on March 1st with a meager 0.75 crore.
Now that a month has gone, the movie is still gaining some traction, at least at the few theaters where it is still showing. The movie, which only recently surpassed the 15 crore threshold, certainly deserved to do much better, but it hasn’t exactly been a walkover, despite what might have seemed when it ended its first week at 6.03 crore.
It had appeared at the time that the Aamir Khan production would not make more than 10 crores. But in the second week, it brought in an additional 4.20 crore, so it actually exceeded that total. That was a very good hold, and the drops have been fairly controlled ever since.
The best sustenance was found in the fourth week, when collections still managed to reach 2 crore, following the third week’s 2.68 crore. At least 1 crore more will be earned by the movie even if the fifth week of distribution doesn’t start out as planned.
The film, directed by Kiran Rao, has ten more days to play before Eid releases, so it would be ideal for it to gather as much momentum as possible before preparing for its OTT release.
