Star Frankie Muniz has provided an important update for the Malcolm in the Middle reboot. Many people consider the popular sitcom, which chronicled the hectic lives of a working-class family, to be among the best of all time.
Cast
Alongside their original series co-stars Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, and Kiana Madeira, who plays Malcolm’s (Muniz) fiancée, Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield have joined the four-episode revival. Keeley Karsten, Vaughan Murrae, Anthony Timpano, and Caleb Ellsworth-Clark have also committed to the series.
Masterson and Berfield will return to their parts as Francis and Reese, Malcolm’s older brothers. Erik Per Sullivan, who portrayed younger brother Dewey in the 2000–06 Fox series, will be replaced by Ellsworth-Clark (Nightmare Alley). (Sullivan’s involvement in the 2010 movie Twelve caused him to leave show business.)
Storyline
As a newborn and toddler in the later seasons of the original series, Timpano (Riverdale) would portray Jamie, the fifth child of Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek). Kelly, the youngest member of the family, is portrayed by Murrae (The Way Home). Karsten (The Fabelmans) will portray Leah, Malcolm’s daughter, who is just as intelligent as her father but far more emotional and sensitive.
In December 2024, Disney+ placed an order for the Malcolm in the Middle revival. Malcolm and Leah will be followed in the four episodes as they become entangled in his family’s turmoil after Hal and Lois insist that he attend their 40th anniversary celebration.
Producing
From 20th Television and New Regency, the revival is written and executive produced by Linwood Boomer, the creator of the series. Executive producers include Cranston, Tracy Katsky of KatCo, Arnon Milchan of New Regency and Gail Berman, Yariv Milchan and Natalie Lehmann, and Ken Kwapis, who will also serve as director for all four episodes. Laura Delahaye and Jimmy Simons are co-EPs.
The Show Could Air On Disney+ In 2026
Given that there will only be four episodes, there is a reasonable probability that the show will be ready to screen by early 2026 at the latest if filming is scheduled to start soon. It has been revealed that Muniz, Kaczmarek, and Cranston will reprise their roles in the Malcolm in the Middle revival series, which will start up after the events of the original series rather than reinventing it. Four 30-minute episodes of the series, which was originally slated to be a two-hour film, will premiere on Disney+.
