Oscar-nominated Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda’s much anticipated anime film Scarlet is set to return and is anticipated to make a significant impact during the competitive holiday and awards season.

Movie Release Date

The film will be released in theaters in North America and other countries on December 12, 2025, according to an official announcement from Sony Pictures. It will be released in Japan on November 21, 2025, a few weeks sooner.

Co-producer

The release date was revealed on Monday by Sony Pictures, which is co-producing and co-financing the movie alongside Studio Chizu and Nippon TV. With the exception of Japan, where Toho is managing the film’s theatrical distribution, Sony will release the movie in the US and other countries.

Storyline

The tale of a courageous princess who crosses space and time is told in Scarlet.

Belle, Wolf Children, and 2018’s Mirai, which had its world debut at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar for best animated movie, are among Hosoda’s credits.

Producer

Scarlet is being produced by Toshimi Tanio of Nippon TV in collaboration with Yuichiro Saito and Nozom Takahashi of Studio Chizu.

Production Studio

Studio Chizu is a production company founded by Hosoda. Seeing his own children interact and his continued interest in family dynamics have served as inspiration for several of the writer-director’s fantasy films, such as Wolf Children (2012) and The Boy and the Beast (2015).
