The much anticipated US release date for Adam Elliot’s critically acclaimed animated film, The Memoir of a Snail, which he wrote, produced, and directed (Mary and Max), has been announced.
The film, which is rumoured to have taken nearly ten years to make, centres on the lonely misfit Grace Puddle (voiced by Sarah Snook from Succession), who is fascinated by decorative snails and romance books. It also explores Puddle’s unexpected bond with an eccentric elderly woman named Pinky.

The animated adult drama will get a limited domestic distribution starting on October 25 and running through November, according to an announcement made by IFC Films. This is Elliot’s second stop-motion picture; his first two were the Oscar-winning 2004 short Harvey Krumpet and Mary and Max from 2009.
Memoir of a Snail was the previous winner of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival’s prestigious Cristal medal for best feature. In addition to its intriguing plot, the movie has a talented ensemble voice cast, including Snook, Kodi Smit-McPhee from “The Power of the Dog,” Jacki Weaver from “Clipped,” Eric Bana from “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” Magda Szubanski from “Baby: Pig in the City,” Dominique Pinon from “Amélie,” and many more.
The official plot synopsis for Memoir of a Snail reads: “Grace Pudel is a lonely misfit with an affinity for collecting ornamental snails and an intense love for books. At a young age, when Grace is separated from her fire-breathing twin brother Gilbert, she falls into a spiral of anxiety and angst. Despite a continued series of hardships, inspiration and hope emerge when she strikes up an enduring friendship with an elderly eccentric woman named Pinky, who is full of grit and lust for life.”
On October 25, Memoir of a Snail opens in theatres across the United States.
