There’s an interesting surprise in store for fans who are excitedly awaiting the OTT release of Munjya, the newest horror-comedy from the Maddock Supernatural Universe. Munjya will first have its television premiere on Star Gold on August 24, 2024, at 8 PM, before making its streaming debut on Disney+ Hotstar.
Munjya: A Box Office Success and Audience Favorite
Aditya Sarpotdar’s film Munjya debuted in theatres on June 7, 2024, and soon after, it became a box office hit. The movie, which was produced by Maddock Films’ Amar Kaushik and Dinesh Vijan, brought in over ₹132 crore globally, ranking it as the sixth highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. The film’s popularity is all the more remarkable considering that its production budget was a mere ₹30 crore. Munjya has received high marks from both reviewers and viewers; it has a 7.2 IMDb rating and a 73% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Munjya Plot: A Story Rooted in Folklore
Munjya takes inspiration from the rich Konkan culture of Maharashtra. In the movie, Abhay Verma’s character Bittu gets embroiled with the malevolent ghost Munjya from the 1950s. After performing a forbidden love ritual and dying tragically, Munjya, a young Brahmin lad, now haunts a peepal tree and aspires to marry Bittu’s love interest, Bela, played by Sharvari.
DNEG’s sophisticated computer-generated imagery (CGI) gives Munjya a distinct mix of humour and terror. Screenwriter Niren Bhatt said in an interview that Munjya is an immature and playful spirit rather than a wicked one. This contradiction gives the story of the movie depth and makes it both charming and terrifying.
Munjya Cast and Crew
Munjya has an excellent ensemble cast that includes Mona Singh as Bittu’s protective mother Pammi and Sathyaraj as the exorcist Elvis Karim Prabhakar in addition to Abhay Verma and Sharvari. The story’s rich tapestry is enhanced by Suhas Joshi’s portrayal of Bittu’s grandma Gita and Bhagyashree Limaye’s appearance as Rukku.
The film’s soundtrack, written by Sachin-Jigar and Justin Varghese, combines humour and spookiness to great effect, and Saurabh Goswami’s photography effectively conveys the spirit of the haunted locations. A notable aspect that contributes to the film’s distinct charm are the visual effects, which accounted for half of the expenditure.
Munjya TV Release
The decision to premiere Munjya on television before its OTT release is a strategic one, aimed at capturing a wider audience. “Premiering on TV allows us to reach viewers who may have missed the theatrical release, offering them a chance to enjoy the film at no additional cost,” explained a spokesperson from Maddock Films. This move also builds anticipation for its eventual release on Disney+ Hotstar, where it is expected to draw significant streaming numbers.
What’s Next For the Cast?
Munjya’s cast members are getting ready for new endeavours as the show continues to gain popularity. Sujoy Ghosh’s action-packed thriller King, starring Abhay Verma, Shah Rukh Khan, and Suhana Khan, is scheduled to release. Verma is set for even greater success after receiving praise for his performance in Munjya.
