Sabotage Studio, the game’s developer and publisher, has revealed that a summer 2023 release window has been set for Sea of Stars.
The Chrono Trigger-themed role-playing game was recently put off until 2023, but this is the first indication of a summer release window. The information was made public on the final day of Nintendo’s week-long Winter indie showcase (opens in new tab), during which we saw brand-new and absolutely stunning gameplay footage from Sea of Stars.
A group of characters can be seen floating at night down a river and crashing into two waterfalls in the new footage. A natural fountain shoots the characters into the air and onto a platform above at one of the waterfalls’ bases. I can’t wait to play this in the summer because the models of the characters and the environments look absolutely stunning.
Yasunori Mitsuda, the legendary composer of Sea of Stars, spoke to us as well. Mitsuda is well-known for his magnificent output, which includes Xenoblade, Chrono Trigger, Mario Party, and Smash Bros. Mitsuda talked about how he’s trying to give Sea of Stars a sound that’s “Super Nintendo style” while also making sure that the game feels “unified” in all aspects.
Sea of Stars is a retro turn-based role-playing game developed in the vein of 16-bit classics like the aforementioned Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest 3, and The Legend of Zelda: The Secret of Mana and a Connection to the Past The acclaimed action platformer The Messenger, which also appears to be straight from the 16-bit era, was developed by Sabotage in 2018.
“Sea of Stars aims to modernize the classic RPG in terms of turn-based combat, storytelling, exploration, and interactions with the environment, while still offering a hearty slice of nostalgia and good old, simple fun,” according to the game’s website. “Promising the Sabotage touch in every system.”
