Viewers can get a closer look at the core actors in the film, which includes Golden Globe contender Peter Sarsgaard and John Magaro from The Big Short. It draws attention to the pivotal moment that permanently altered media coverage when the news crew recognised that the hostage situation’s live broadcast might also be being watched by terrorists. Since its international premiere at the recent Venice International Film Festival, the movie has received a Tomatometer rating of 92% and a nearly flawless score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Tim Fehlbaum, who co-wrote the screenplay with Alex David and Moritz Binder, is the director of September 5. Leonie Benesch, Zinedine Soualem, Georgina Rich, Corey Johnson, Marcus Rutherford, Daniel Adeosun, Benjamin Walker, Ferdinand Dörfler, and Ben Chaplin are also featured in the movie. Fehlbaum, Sean Penn, John Ira Palmer, John Wildermuth, and Philipp Trauer are the producers; Martin Moszkowicz and Christoph Müller serve as executive producers.

“Set during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, it follows an American Sports broadcasting team that quickly adapted from sports reporting to live coverage of the Israeli athletes taken hostage,” reads the synopsis. “Through this lens, September 5 provides a fresh perspective on the live broadcast seen globally by an estimated one billion people at the time.

At the heart of the story is Geoff, a young and ambitious producer striving to prove himself to his boss, the legendary TV executive Roone Arledge. Together with German interpreter Marianne and his mentor Marvin Bade, Geoff unexpectedly takes the helm of the live coverage. As narratives shift, time ticks away, and conflicting rumors spread, with the hostages’ lives hanging in the balance, Geoff grapples with tough decisions while confronting his own moral compass.”
