After its first limited theatrical run in July 2024, Sing Sing is becoming a more popular contender for this year’s Best Picture award. The film extended to 560 theatres during the weekend, which was its biggest run to date. This move paid off, as the Colman Domingo-led project saw three of its most successful days to date. As a result, Sing Sing has officially surpassed the $3 million mark at the box office both locally and abroad, marking an important milestone.

This financial result, which was produced on a low $2 million budget, is nevertheless advantageous for A24 because Sing Sing’s chances of financial success are improved by the movie’s gradually rising release trajectory and the growing excitement around the awards season. Along with its increasing commercial success, the movie has received positive reviews from critics and viewers alike, earning a remarkable 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of 2024’s best movies.

“The passion and care required to make a film like Sing Sing are on full display in every frame,” explained Taylor Gates of Collider in her review of the movie. The remainder of the group has more than earned their bouquets, even though Domingo is the clear star. They went on to explain that “one can only hope that shining a light on the humanity of a population that has often been stigmatised and brutalised will lead to genuine systemic change in the near-future.”

Sing Sing’s Unconventional Release Strategy Has Not Benefited Its Box Office Performance

A24’s strikingly realistic movie Sing Sing, which tells the story of how a theatre group for men in prison was formed, has faced an odd release schedule. The movie debuted in theatres in the United States in July 2024 after making its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023. However, it barely made $361,000 throughout its nearly month-long domestic run in just four theatres until its distribution grew, although by just 14 theatres. By September 1, the movie had expanded to a maximum of 191 theatres, earning slightly less than $2 million during that time.

There have been further theatrical releases of the movie after then, although they haven’t expanded much. This breathtakingly gorgeous picture finally received the wider exposure it so richly deserves during the past weekend.
