Prior to its digital release, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has accomplished a noteworthy milestone by becoming the highest-grossing game in the franchise’s history.
This third installment, which is slated for digital release in the US on January 21, finds Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles teaming up with Dr. Robotnik to take on Shadow the Hedgehog. The UK release date has not yet been disclosed.
As stated by Deadline, Sonic 3 has officially outperformed all prior Sonic flicks with a $420 million worldwide box office receipt.
Sonic 3, the series’ most lucrative installment, has surpassed Sonic 2, which brought in $405 million, while the original Sonic movie brought in $320 million worldwide.
The creators of Sonic 3 recently talked about their choice to change the movie’s conclusion in order to set it apart from the story of the original video game.
Gamers will remember that while helping Shadow escape, Maria Robotnik is cruelly slain by a soldier, leaving Sonic devastated and motivated by a desire for vengeance.
According to writers Josh Miller and Pat Casey, this was “never on the cards” for the movie, which had to find another way to include a revenge arc.
“From the moment that we even started talking about how to do it, everyone was kind of like, well, ‘I don’t think we can just shoot a little girl’,” Miller explained in an interview with GamesRadar.
“It’s gonna be tough enough to have a whole storyline that hinges on a little girl getting killed in this PG movie, but having her get shot seemed like it was never on the cards.”
In the meantime, Sonic 3 is available for pre-order in the UK on iTunes and Prime Video. In the US, it may be pre-ordered on iTunes and Prime Video.
