The rights to a new Resident Evil movie adaptation, which is being directed and co-written by Barbarian filmmaker Zach Cregger, have been acquired by Sony Pictures after a fierce bidding battle. Shay Hatten co-wrote the screenplay, which is co-produced and co-financed by Constantin Film. PlayStation Productions and other producers include Robert Kulzer (Constantin), Roy Lee, and Miri Yoon (Vertigo Entertainment).
Release Date
September 18, 2026 has been scheduled as the date of the theatrical release. Though it is unknown, Cregger’s screenplay, which he co-wrote with Shay Hatten (Ballerina, John Wick: Chapter 3 & Chapter 4), seems to reference the horror elements of the original Capcom game.
Plot
A virus has gotten loose in a covert establishment known as “The Hive,” transforming the employees into ravenous zombies and releasing the altered Lab “Animals” that they were researching. The base is shut down by the sophisticated computer to avoid contagion. Alice, who has been exposed to nerve gas and is experiencing amnesia, is met by the parent company’s elite military squad. In order to prevent the infection from spreading to the rest of the world, the military team must shut down the computer and leave, battling their way past mutants, zombies, and the computer itself. Alice also has to accept the memories that are slowly coming back to her.
Writer and Director
Cregger is the writer and director of the upcoming film, which is based on the video game series about a world overrun by zombies as a result of a viral pandemic caused by a malicious corporation. It’s co-written by Shay Hatten. Co-producing and co-financing the film is Constantin Film. Additionally producing are Robert Kulzer of Constantin, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment, and PlayStation Productions.

Box Office Performance
All prior Resident Evil films, including those directed by Milla Jovovich and Paul W.S. Anderson, as well as Resident Evil: Racoon City, which was released in 2021 by Johannes Roberts, were distributed by Sony Pictures. At $1.2 billion globally, Resident Evil is among the highest-grossing video game film franchises ever, closely behind the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy’s $1.2 billion and Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $1.36 billion.
Cregger became a fresh voice in horror thanks to Barbarian, and a bidding war broke out when he released his follow-up horror project. He became a final cut director for that upcoming movie, Weapons, which Warners’ New Line division won. January 2026 is when Weapons is scheduled to open in theatres.
The relaunch will be produced by PlayStation Productions and Constantin Film, which has owned the cinematic rights to the franchise since the late 1990s and has produced the previous films. Co-writing is Shay Hatten, who contributed to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead and John Wick: Chapter 4.
