The title and release date for Pharrell Williams and Michel Gondry’s highly anticipated musical film have been revealed. On May 9, 2025, Universal Pictures will widen the distribution of “Atlantis.”
The movie is billed as an exploration of the summer of 1977 in the Virginia Beach neighbourhood, with inspiration drawn from Williams’ early years at the Atlantis Apartments, however specifics of the plot are still being worked out.
Kelvin Harrison Jr. (“The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “Genius”), Halle Bailey (“The Little Mermaid,” “The Colour Purple”), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers,” “Only Murders in the Building”), Quinta Brunson (“Causeway,” “Bullet Train”), Tim Meadows (“Saturday Night Live,” “Mean Girls”), Jayson Lee (“61st Street,” “Utopia”), Jamilah Rosemond (“Rustin,” “Fabulous Confabulation with Jamilah Rosemond”), Jaboukie Young-White (“C’mon C’mon,” “Fantasmas”), and Missy Elliott are among the all-star cast.
Director Gondry, who won awards for both “The Science of Sleep” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” oversees a screenplay written by Steven Levenson (“Tick, Tick… Boom!,” Broadway’s “Dear Evan Hansen”) and Martin Hynes (“Toy Story 4”).
Songs from Williams and the renowned musical team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (“The Greatest Showman,” “La La Land”) are featured in the coming-of-age movie. Williams, Mimi Valdés (“Hidden Figures,” “Harlem”), and Gil Netter (“Life of Pi,” “The Blind Side”) are the producers of “Atlantis.”
Executive producers of the movie are Michael Mayer, Pasek, Paul, Shani Saxon, Jennie Lee, Raffi Adlan, and Matthew Hirsch.
The project will be managed by Universal’s Senior Vice President of Production Development, Ryan Jones, and Director of Production Development, Christine Sun.
