The official theatrical release date for Screen Gems’ next film, Until Dawn, was revealed by Sony Pictures. The popular interactive horror video game series of the same name from Supermassive Games served as the inspiration for the live-action version.
Sony Pictures informed to Deadline that the eagerly awaited Until Dawn film will now be released on April 25, 2025, in theatres next spring. This puts it squarely against Ben Affleck’s thriller sequel, The Accountant 2. The movie will also make its premiere in the same month as other well-known films like the Blumhouse horror Drop, Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biography Michael, and Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie. Following director David F. Sandberg’s recent revelation that production on the impending horror film Shazam! has officially concluded, the date was announced.
Supermassive Games developed the first Until Dawn game, which was released in 2015. The game’s creative team included director Will Byles and Nik Bowen, producer Peter Samuels, and designer Tom Heaton. It included the voices and likenesses of Meaghan Martin, Brett Dalton, Jordan Fisher, Hayden Panettiere, and Noah Fleiss. A year after two of their pals vanished, eight companions unexpectedly find themselves alone in a secluded mountain hideaway in the original video game. Players will be able to take control of each character as they attempt to escape from an unidentified killer and unravel the mystery surrounding their missing pals. Throughout the game, the decisions the players make will determine each character’s destiny.
What to Expect in the Until Dawn Movie?
Screenwriter Gary Dauberman, who most recently directed Max’s Salem’s Lot, wrote the screenplay for the film Until Dawn, which Sandberg is directing. After directing Annabelle: Creation, a spinoff of The Conjuring, for seven years, Sandberg’s first horror film in a long time is Until Dawn. Michael Cimino (Love, Victor), Odessa A’zion (Hellraiser), Ji-young Yoo (Expats), Maia Mitchell (The Fosters), Ella Rubin (The Girl from Plainville), and Belmont Cameli (Saved by the Bell) will serve as the film’s directors. They have yet to release any additional information about their characters.
Although Sony has not yet released an official synopsis, the film is thought to be “an R-rated and terrifying love letter to the horror genre, centring on an ensemble cast.” Peter Stormare, who originally provided the voice of Dr. Allan J. Hill in the original computer game, is also a member of the live-action cast. It’s still unclear if Stormare was chosen to play a different role in the film or if he would also play the aforementioned psychiatrist. Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions are the production companies, and the producers are Carter Swan, Dauberman, Sandberg, Lotta Losten, Roy Lee, and Asad Qizilbash.
