The Shrouds, directed by David Cronenberg, has an official release date in the United States. Even though Cronenberg’s early horror films included Shivers, Rabid, Videodrome, and The Fly, he took a hiatus from directing horror films following eXistenZ in 1999. After directing films like Maps to the Stars, A Dangerous Method, and Eastern Promises, he finally made a comeback with the gory 2022 body horror film Crimes of the Future. The director is continuing his genre Renaissance with the next film The Shrouds, starring Vincent Cassel as a grieving widower who creates technology to monitor the decay of loved ones.

The Shrouds now has an official release date, according to Deadline. On April 18, Sideshow and Janus Films will release the film in Los Angeles and New York City. On April 25, the film will be widely released across the United States. This will come before the film’s already scheduled April 30 French theatrical debut, which is being handled by Pyramide Distribution.

The Implications For The Shrouds

It Has Serious Rivals

The Shrouds, a Cronenberg film, will have fierce competition from other April horror films when it opens. The Christopher Landon thriller Drop will open the month’s genre selections on April 11. On April 18, a tripleheader of the supernatural Ryan Coogler film Sinners, the exorcism film The Ritual, and the Finn Wolfhard slasher Hell of a Summer will be released. On April 25, the same day that The Shrouds goes on sale, the Until Dawn adaptation will be released, capping this off.

It’s unlikely that the video game adaptation will do better at the box office than the grief-driven body horror film, but David Cronenberg might still have a good film. The Shrouds received a strong Fresh score of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes following its May 2024 Cannes premiere and September screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, which may be excellent news for the film’s theatrical prospects.

Our Opinion on the Shrouds’ Publication Date

Previous Experience Indicates That It May Engage Audiences

The fact that the Australian found footage horror film Late Night with the Devil made a big impression by earning the best debut ever for an IFC Films release and ultimately grossing $15.5 million worldwide in the spring of 2024 is another element that might favour The Shrouds. It might be followed by the David Cronenberg film, which would satisfy a thirst for cerebral horror before the summer film season begins.
