Wicked has reached a major milestone globally and continues to enthral people at the box office. Musician Ariana Grande made her feature film debut in this picture, which was one of the best-performing films at the box office the year before.
With an estimated $150 million in production costs, the movie has already made almost 4.67 times as much money. In addition to being the highest-grossing movie in the Oz franchise, the highest-grossing musical adaption ever made, and the highest-grossing musical picture distributed by Universal Pictures, it won the Golden Globe Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Around Thanksgiving of this year, Wicked: For Good, its sequel, is also scheduled to debut.
As of Wednesday, Wicked had officially surpassed the $700 million mark at the worldwide box office, according to trade expert Luiz Fernando. The Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo-starring musical fantasy has made $240.4 million worldwide in more than 80 regions. Interestingly, the movie hasn’t been released in Japan yet, and a successful run there would allow it to surpass Dune: Part Two’s $714 million total receipts.
With the exception of well-known stars like Tom Cruise or directors like Christopher Nolan, the days of films having three-month exclusive theatrical premieres are essentially over. Gladiator’s impending streaming release fits perfectly with this pattern. The follow-up did well in its first month of release and remained strong over the Christmas season, but it only made $1.2 million on the weekend of January 10–12. The fact that it was shown on roughly 1,300 screens is significant since it shows a definite drop in interest.
Finally, even if the ensemble of Gladiator 2 includes well-known stars like Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington, the movie is likely to be a box office flop. The sequel probably needed to make at least $500 million to break even, if not more, given its estimated $250 million production expense.
