Even though Wicked is still breaking box office records worldwide, earning over $680 million to date, making it the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation in Hollywood history, Jon M. Chu’s film has continued its remarkable financial run with a record-breaking debut on digital.

Wicked Sets New Digital Sales Record for Universal Pictures

The popular Wizard of Oz prequel made a total of $70 million in its first week on digital platforms in the US and Canada, according to a recent Variety article. For Universal Pictures, this was a new milestone. The first home video launch of The Super Mario Bros. Movie (now available on Peacock) brought in a week-high of $44 million.

In addition to being the second film to win a Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Wicked was named the National Board of Review’s 2024 Best Film. “My parents came to this country and loved The Wizard of Oz,” director Jon M. Chu said in an emotional acceptance speech. “They’d tell us about the Yellow Brick Road and the place over the rainbow [where] all your dreams come true if you dare to dream it. And so when I’m up here, looking at you, living the dream and looking at this beautiful, beautiful cast, it’s more beautiful than I ever thought it could be.”

In the future, the film is already eligible to receive numerous awards from the Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards, the Cinema Audio Society Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the NAACP Image Awards.
